What the
Tape
Says.

Randy talks pitching. Barry talks hitting. They start with what's working, tell you why it matters, and give you one thing to do in the next pen or cage session. All levels.

Example data

What I see: His curveball spin is steady, around 2,350 every session, so that's not it. His release is moving. On the good ones the spin is straight over the top and it bites. On the bad ones it tilts toward the side and the pitch rolls.

Why it matters: He's really throwing two different curveballs. Hitters can sit on the one that rolls.

Do this next: Have him feel his middle finger pull straight down the front of the ball, like pulling down a window shade. Do one pen of 10 to 12 curveballs at full effort and watch the break tighten up.

Example: Barry · Hitting

What I see: You're hitting on top of the ball. Average launch is 2 degrees, so most of what you hit is a grounder. On the tape your barrel is chopping down through the zone instead of working through it.

Why it matters: Hard grounders are outs at most levels. Line drives (roughly 8 to 32 degrees off the bat) are where hits and doubles come from.

Do this next: Set the tee at the top of the zone and drive line drives up the middle. "Stay on plane, through the ball." Go 20 swings.
